If there’s a better story of perseverance and work ethic paying off than the tale scripted by Shawn Horcoff during the 12 seasons he spent playing with the Edmonton Oilers, I can’t think of it. From fourth-round draft pick and fourth-line winger when he first broke into the NHL to first-line centre and captain of the Oilers, Horcoff’s ascent was the product of a dash of talent and a heaping helping of being willing to work harder than anybody else.

Curtis Joseph provided fans of the Edmonton Oilers with so many magnificent moments during the three seasons he spent here, but if you’re like me, there’s one burned into your brain. It happened April 29, 1997 with the Oilers and the Dallas Stars locked in a 3-3 tie in overtime at old Reunion Arena. That was almost 20 years ago, but you know what happens next. Of course you do.

Sure, there’s a chance that I could end up on the cover of GQ Magazine. Impossible as it might seem, there is a chance. Of course, it’s not going to happen. Same goes for the Edmonton Oilers missing the playoffs this season. Yes, there’s a chance they could miss. It’s not going to happen.

I can say without any doubt Bill Guerin absolutely loved playing for the Edmonton Oilers, and he felt that way at a time when the glory days of five Stanley Cups were little more than a faded memory. Teammates and fans, in return, felt the same way about Guerin, a speedy power forward from Massachusetts who arrived in Edmonton via the New Jersey Devils in the 1998 trade that sent Jason Arnott the other way.
